High-risk pregnancies are those with pre-existing or actual conditions that increase the risk of complications for the mother and fetus. Several factors may be involved, such as very young or old age, low levels of education and nutrition, and poor or unhealthy living conditions. High-risk pregnancies should be identified as early as possible so that better treatment can be offered in order to improve maternal and baby outcomes.
The most frequent conditions associated with high-risk pregnancies are gestational diabetes, obesity, thyroid disease, infection and pre-eclampsia.
In addition, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has altered normal lifestyles and encouraged the use of new approaches such as telemedicine for the management of high-risk pregnancies.
However, the role of SARS-COV-2 on embryogenesis and on development of the placenta is still not well known.
In this Special Issue, we aim to highlight new approaches and to provide summaries of the current evidence and future directions on the topic of high-risk pregnancies. Research and review articles in this field are welcome.
