Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Spatially fractionated radiation therapy (SFRT) has shown promise in generating good tumor response and local control for the treatment of various palliative and locally advanced bulky tumors. Bulky gynecological tumors are a rare entity of large primary tumors, for which only a limited range of therapeutic options is available. Aggressive treatment of such large primary tumors can significantly prolong patient survival and improve quality of life by delaying tumor progression to extra-pelvic sites. When a surgical approach is deemed unsuitable for bulky gynecological tumors due to comorbidities and/or technical feasibility, low dose radiotherapy is administered with palliative intent only. Lattice radiotherapy is a type of SFRT specifically designed to treat and debulk large tumor masses that are not candidates for normo-fractionated, homogeneous, high-dose radiotherapy schedules because of potentially harmful dose-volume effects.
