Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

High sodium intake is an important risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The World Health Orgnization (WHO) has recommended that the daily intake of salt (sodium choloride) should be less than 5 grams/day for adults. Salt reduction has been identified by the WHO as one of the ‘best buys’ for public health strategies for the prevention and control of major chronic diseases around the globe.

However, there are tremendous challenges for the implementation of salt reduction strategies globally. More than 90% of the world’s population still have a mean salt intake above 5 grams per day. Therefore, there is an urgent need for reseach to develop effective strategies for salt reduction at the local, regional and global level. This should include the overall effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and safety of salt reduction strategies in real world practice, the barriers to the implementation of salt reduction strategies, the reliable and applicable methods for monitoring salt intake at the individual and population level, and the ideal level of individual salt intake.

We welcome health professionals, public health workers, policy makers, and anyone who may be involved or interested in salt reduction and health, to submit your relevant work to the journal for publication. We hope that you will enjoy this experience and that working together, we can use science to improve the health of people globally.
