Dear Colleagues,
As we age, our skin, nails and scalp hair change due to several processes that are associated with intrinsic, extrinsic or chronological mechanisms as well as photoaging. Fine lines, wrinkles, redness, and darkened spots/patches may appear on parts of the body that receive frequent sun exposure, such as the face, neck, chest, arms, back and hands. Additionally, facial wrinkles and fine lines naturally develop over the years from repetitive mechanical muscle contractions when laughing, smiling, and furrowing the brow. Nails can become cracked/brittle, pitted, or discolored. Moreover, with aging, scalp hair loss is a challenge for women and men that influences and/or impacts psychological health. There are many applications/treatments and choices to address aging such as cosmetics, nutritional supplements, laser, Botox, and injectables along with lifestyle changes such as weight control, diet, exercise, sleep, and abstinence from alcohol, smoking or vaping. The use of botanicals in topical and oral personal care products has dramatically increased over the years. Additionally, advancements in technology for skin and hair rejuvenation has progressed in unimaginable ways. In this special issue, achievements discovered in the cellular, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms that regulate and/or influence biomarkers (e.g., collagen, elastin, TIMP, MMPs, Nfkβ, inflammation, and oxidative stress) that impact dermatology health will be highlighted. These topics plus many more, will be discussed in detail in this special issue devoted to Antiaging in Dermatology.
