Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This proposal outlines a Special Issue entitled AI and the Transformation of Knowledge Organization and Knowledge Management, to be coordinated by Dr. Gercina Lima, Dr. Benildes Maculan, and Dr. Elisangela Aganette, (Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil). The aim of the proposed issue is to examine how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the theoretical, methodological, and practical foundations of both Knowledge Organization (KO) and Knowledge Management (KM). By integrating epistemological, technological, ethical, and sociotechnical perspectives, the Special Issue seeks to advance contemporary debates on AI-driven approaches to representation, indexing, classification, semantic structuring, information governance, and organizational knowledge practices.

The proposal emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary dialogue by encouraging contributions from related fields such as computer science, data engineering, digital humanities, and science and technology studies. It invites critical and forward-looking submissions that explore conceptual advances, methodological innovations, empirical findings, and reflective analyses at the intersection of AI, KO, and KM, in both academic and professional contexts.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Theoretical and epistemological shifts in Knowledge Organization and Knowledge Management paradigms
  • Emerging technologies, including knowledge graphs, ontologies, semantic search, natural language processing (NLP), automated curation, and intelligent workflows
  • Transformations in knowledge management and professional practices in libraries, archives, museums, enterprises, and organizational information systems
  • Ethical and social issues, such as transparency, algorithmic bias, epistemic justice, and accountability in AI-mediated knowledge processes
  • Implications for education and training in Library and Information Science (LIS), Knowledge Management, and related fields
  • Empirical case studies demonstrating innovative applications of AI in knowledge systems, services, and organizational environments
