Aims & Scope
Knowledge Organization (KO) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal and international forum for research on the organization of knowledge at both universal and domain-specific levels. The journal aims to advance the theory, methodology, and practice of knowledge organization by fostering research that bridges foundational conceptual inquiry with emerging technological and societal challenges.
The journal publishes high-quality original research that:
- develops or revisits theoretical and epistemological foundations of KO;
- critically examines the design, evaluation, governance, and use of knowledge organization systems;
- analyzes the implications of emerging technologies—such as artificial intelligence, knowledge graphs, and semantic infrastructures—on conceptual modeling, representation, and classification practices;
- addresses ethical, cultural, political, and social dimensions of organizing knowledge in contemporary contexts.
KO encourages interdisciplinary contributions that situate knowledge organization within broader debates on information infrastructures, data governance, digital heritage, and responsible AI.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- General theory of ordering, philosophical and epistemological foundations of knowledge organization
- Theories, principles, and comparative studies of classification, indexing, metadata, and vocabulary control
- Ontology, terminology and other semantic models;
- Technologies in KO (e.g., knowledge graphs, information extraction and mining, semantic technologies, linked data)
- Knowledge organization and AI
- Knowledge organization systems and intelligent services;
- Knowledge organization systems as sociotechnical and epistemic infrastructures
- User-centered, ethical, and critical perspectives on KO systems
- Knowledge organization ecosystems and their governance
- Applications of KO in cultural heritage, science, health, education, information governance, and digital environments
- Interdisciplinary approaches connecting knowledge organization with knowledge management, information retrieval, data science, cognitive science, and other fields
- KO education and training
