Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Diseases of the retina and optic nerve are common and have a deleterious impact on visual acuity and the quality of life of affected patients. Age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma are among the leading causes of severe visual impairment and blindness worldwide. Ischemia-reperfusion events, oxidative stress, immunological and genetic factors all contribute to the pathophysiology of retinal and optic nerve diseases. To tailor specific treatment regimens and establish new therapeutic approaches for these diseases, it is indispensable to understand their pathophysiology at the molecular level. We encourage submissions of original research and review articles on basic molecular biology, pathophysiology and treatment approaches in the field of retinal and optic nerve diseases for this special issue entitled ‘Retinal Biology in Health and Disease-Volume 2’.

The special issue will cover topics that include cellular functions, receptor signaling, oxidative stress, immunological aspects, metabolic diseases, retinal and optic nerve perfusion, neovascularization and drug applications.
