Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Several studies have shown that patients with existing cardiovascular diseases who develop SARS-CoV-2 infections have a poor prognosis; especially those presenting with an acute myocardial injury, in whom mortality is increased. In addition, existing coronary artery disease is a significant risk factor for acute myocardial infarction among patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more difficult for cardiovascular physicians to deliver optimal care for heart patients, and there have been delays in treatment. There is also a concern regarding the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in patients with and those that develop cardiovascular diseases, which may contribute to increased morbidity and mortality. The role of prevention, including effective cholesterol lowering medication, is essential. In addition, the role of ACE2 receptors and endothelial dysfunction is under intensive investigation to determine the vascular pathogenesis of the SARS-CoV-2 infection.
This Special Issue welcomes original research articles, opinion articles and reviews related to all aspects of cardiovascular health and COVID-19.
