Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is defined as unexpected, nontraumatic death occurring within one hour of the onset of new or worsening symptoms or, if unwitnessed, within 24 h of last being seen alive. The most common causes of SCD are ischemic heart disease, nonischemic structural heart disease, or primary electrical disease. SCD continues to represent a major public health challenge, being difficult to prevent this dramatic event. Efforts focused at prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure remain a cornerstone of SCD preventive therapy; moreover, the public access to automatic external defibrillator (AED) has been successful in improving survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in many settings. The aim of this Special Issue is to discuss issues associated with sudden cardiac death in special population, such as athletes, patients with neuromuscular disorders, inherithed electrical diseases, congenital heart diseases, with a focus on diagnostic workup, invasive and non-invasive diagnostic approaches, and finally, therapeutic options that provide a framework for decision making in this difficult scenario.
