Dear Colleagues,

Recent years have witnessed the rising popularity of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques as intervention strategies for mental disorders. NIBS includes transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), which works by creating a focal magnetic field that changes brain activity in both transient and prolonged ways. Magnetic fields applied to the brain are able to induce short-term neural excitation or inhibition, as well as long-term changes in synaptic activity. Several TMS techniques are currently used in therapeutic applications. When delivered repetitively, TMS can modulate cortical excitability and neuronal metabolic activity, thereby producing changes in cortical function and behavior. TMS has been used alone or in combination with other treatment approaches for a range of psychiatric disorders. It has been successfully employed for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and more recently for addiction. TMS is also known to be effective for other psychiatric conditions including bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorder and autism spectrum disorder.
