Graphic Abstract: Morphological Alterations in Schizophrenia—An Interdisciplinary Review

With the exception of differential diagnosis to exclude other diseases such as tumors or other neurodegenerative diseases, the examination of structural changes in the central nervous system is still not part of standard diagnostics for schizophrenia. Due to the accelerated development of new morphological evaluation methods in neuroradiology, neuropathology and ophthalmology, a summarized interdisciplinary presentation of structural changes in schizophrenia is therefore necessary. In addition, more recent findings in genetics should also be mentioned, especially as the dysregulation of individual genes shows a direct statistical relationship to morphological changes. The current findings on morphological changes of the central nervous system and the eye in schizophrenia are presented comprehensively in our review together with findings on genetic changes; the most important structural changes are named in the following graphical abstract.
