Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Endometrial cancer (EC) is the most common malignancy of the female reproductive system over 300,000 new cases are diagnosed annually worldwide. EC generally develops in women after menopause, but in 25% of cases, it can occur in the pre-menopausal age group.; Approximately 3%–14% of EC cases are diagnosed in women under 40 years of age.
Several factors increase the risk for endometrial cancer, including excessive levels of estrogen exposure, early menarche, late menopause, nulliparity, infertility, use of tamoxifen, polycystic ovary syndrome, obesity, and genetic predisposition (Lynch syndrome and Cowden syndrome). The major symptom occurring in 90% of women is abnormal uterine bleeding, including postmenopausal bleeding and abnormal discharge.
EC has traditionally been categorized into two broad classifications: type I (endometrioid adenocarcinomas) and type II (serous carcinomas and clear cell carcinomas).
However, molecular and genetic findings have increased since the publication of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data. As a result of these studies, it is now easier to understand the different biological characteristics, pathogenesis, behaviors, and prognosis of this group of endometrial cancers.
This special series of articles can be viewed as a significant advancement in our understanding of endometrial cancer, and they should encourage further dialogue among readers.
Key topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Novel techniques to advance EC management include early diagnosis, risk stratification and control of recurrent disease.
- Advances in immunohistochemical profiling of EC and therapeutic approaches into clinical practice.
- Innovative and effective approaches, technologies, and therapeutic strategies.
We are seeking contributions such as Original Articles, Reviews, Systematic Reviews, Editorials and Letters to the Editor in order to share your knowledge and insight on the topic of EC.
