Special Interview with Prof. Andrea Tinelli: CEOG Journal Editorial Board and Stanford World's Top 2% Scientists

16 May 2025

Clinical and Experimental Obstetrics & Gynecology (CEOG) is an international, peer-reviewed, open access journal. It covers all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynecology, aiming to publish high quality scientific research in this field. Recently, we had the pleasure of conducting an exclusive interview with Prof. Andrea Tinelli, a member of the Editorial Board of CEOG, which will not only discuss his achievements but also hope to inspire more researchers through his experience.

Brief introduction of Prof. Andrea Tinelli:

Prof. Andrea Tinelli is a distinguished medical expert and scholar in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His main areas of research are minimally invasive surgery and gynecological endoscopic techniques, obstetric surgery and management of complications.

He completed his medical degree magna “cum laude” in 1996, at School of Medicine “Federico II” of Naples, Italy, and specialized in Obstetrics & Gynecology “cum laude” in 2000 at University of Trieste, Italy. And he carried out surgical fellowship in University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), in Abteilung für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe, LKH Villach (Austria), in European Institute of Oncology (Milan, Italy) and in National Oncological Institute of Aviano (Italy).

Prof. Andrea Tinelli is an author and co-author of 10 Books, more than 450 papers, on peer-reviewed medical journals and 80 textbook chapters; He collaborated with many Hospitals and Universities, as Editorial Board Member of Scientific Journals. The h-Index of his articles is 36, with more than 6000 citations.

Content of the interview:

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself?

Prof. Andrea Tinelli: Currently I’m Chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology Department and Scientific Manager of CERICSAL (Centro Ricerche Cliniche del Salento) at “Veris delli Ponti” Hospital, Scorrano, Lecce, Italy. I had a PhD in Morphological Molecular Sciences, at Catholic University of Sacred Heart, Rome, Italy. I have the National Authorization as Full Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology. At the same time, I’m Honorary Professor at Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China and I was Former Adjunct Professor at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), Moscow, Russia.

I’m author and co-author of 10 Books, more than 450 papers, on peer-reviewed medical journals and 80 textbook chapters.

2. What are the themes on which your research interests are focused and what was the opportunity that motivated you to specialize in these research areas?

Prof. Andrea Tinelli: My clinical specialties include minimally invasive surgery and gynecological endoscopy, obstetric surgery and complications management, gynecological surgical oncology, molecular biology in gynecology, endometriosis and pelvic floor repair. Learning experiences at several research organizations led me to focus and continue to work deeply in these research directions.

3. In the areas you focus on, what do you think might be the future research hotspots?

Prof. Andrea Tinelli: I think that minimally invasive surgery and gynecological endoscopy might be the future research hotspots.

4. What has been the most challenging research topic or the most fulfilling achievement in your academic career so far?

Prof. Andrea Tinelli: I have done a lot of molecular, ultrastructural and biological research on uterine fibroids, on which I dedicated my PhD. However, the satisfaction was great as I am in 12th place in the world in scientific research on uterine fibroids according to the Expertscape ranking: https://expertscape.com/ex/leiomyoma

5. As a member of the editorial board, what qualities do you think editorial board members should possess in evaluating manuscripts?

Prof. Andrea Tinelli: In my opinion, understanding and expertise in the subject to be evaluated, expertise in scientific methodology and experience in the literature on the topic in question are very important.

6. As an author, what factors do you prioritize when selecting a journal for submission? For example, do you consider the journal’s impact factor, manuscript processing time, open access status, etc.?

Prof. Andrea Tinelli: I think that the Journal reputation is extremely important. Then the journal’s impact factor is very important, as well as knowing the average manuscript processing time, sometimes it is also important to understand if there is an open access status. These factors will affect the publication of my article to some extent.

7. In your opinion, what measures can be taken to encourage editorial board members to be more actively engaged in journal-related responsibilities?

Prof. Andrea Tinelli: First of all, to be a member of the Editorial Board, it is necessary to be clear that very well-defined qualities are needed. The selection must be rigorous and exclusive. Every scientist who agrees to participate in the Editorial Board must NECESSARILY accept the rules of the Journal. Then perhaps the Journal must take charge of some benefits that can be proposed, such as free publication of papers or editorials, or PDF certificates that can be used in some competitions or positions for career advancement.

8. In recent years, AI has been increasingly used in the medical field. What do you think of its application prospects in obstetrics and gynecology? Do you use AI tools in your daily scientific research, such as writing, language polishing of articles, data analysis or diagnostic assistance?

Prof. Andrea Tinelli: AI is a great tool that can be of great help in the scientific evaluation of a manuscript or in the structuring of a paper. The usual problem that exists is the possible abuse of this tool, which can negatively affect the final quality of the paper.

9. What advice would you offer to young physicians or researchers who are just beginning their academic careers?

Prof. Andrea Tinelli: I suggest to a young researcher to study a lot of the scientific literature specific to a topic that fascinates him and to be able to frequent the experts who study that specific sector to learn from them and broaden their cultural background.

Additionally, Prof. Andrea Tinelli is leading special issues in Clinical and Experimental Obstetrics & Gynecology (CEOG). We welcome readers to explore the latest research — and for those interested, submissions are open for the following topic:

Modern Concepts Applied to Endoscopic Surgery, Imaging, Minimally Invasive Technology and Therapy in Gynecology (https://doi.org/10.31083/j.ceog5003059) Submissions are currently open.

We thank Prof. Andrea Tinelli for sharing his experience and look forward to continuing to work together in the future to bring more valuable academic content to the field of obstetrics and gynecology!
