Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Infertility is “the inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse.” This means that a couple is not able to become pregnant after a year of trying. However, for women aged 35 years and older, the inability to conceive after 6 months of trying is generally considered as infertility.

Infertility affects millions of people of reproductive age worldwide – and has an impact on their families and communities.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels. The ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs.

The exact cause of PCOS is unknown. Early diagnosis and treatment along with weight loss may reduce the risk of long-term complications such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome.

Multidisciplinary collaboration is needed between oncologists and reproductive specialists in order to improve awareness of PCOS and the availability of treatment.

The aim of this Special Issue is to advance the field of fertility treatment by addressing female and male infertility.

We welcome original clinical and basic research articles, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews on the following topics:

• Inositol and insulin resistance in PCOS
• Fertility preservation
• Cryopreservation
• Assisted reproductive technologies
• Medical, legal and ethical aspects of infertility
• Psychological impact on the infertile couple
• Endometriosis as a cause of infertility
• Male infertility

We hope to receive your contribution to help move this field forward,

Our best regards

Dr. Giuseppe Gullo and Prof. Dr. Gaspare Cucinella
