Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a novel class of RNA molecules defined as transcripts longer than 200 nucleotides that lack protein coding potential. Increasing evidences have shown lncRNAs play key roles in various biological processes, especially development of cancer. However, the biological and molecular mechanisms of lncRNAs are not yet fully understood. In this review the authors outline the current state of knowledge about the fast growing field of application of lncRNAs as tumor biomarkers in cervical cancer. Finally, they discuss the potential of lncRNAs as prospective novel targets in cervical cancer treatment and biomarkers for cervical cancer diagnosis.
