Progress in the radioisotope surgery of the cervical carcinoma
The present paper reviews the various stages in the development of radioisotope-assisted radical surgery. In 73 cases undergoing type 1 surgery the death rate due to recurrent carcinoma was 17.7 % versus 20.7 % in the group subjected to no procedure other than the Wertheim operation between 1961 and 1965. While not statistically significant, this improvement assumes added weight on account of the larger percentage of cases with lymph node involvement in the radio-gold group versus the control group (23.2 % versus 19.5 %). Type 3 radioisotope-assisted radical surgery was developed for a further improvement of the success rate. It is based on the use of radioactive colloidal Technetium for labeling, which offers various advantages versus the previously employed colloidal gold technique.
