Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

You are cordially invited to contribute to this Special Issue of the Journal of Men’s Health dedicated to oxidative stress, polyphenol, and male fertility.

Many environmental factors can cause infertility, such as nutritional deficiencies and oxidative stress caused by pesticides and industrial chemicals, tobacco smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and heat exposure to the testes, which can damage semen quality. The involvement of reactive oxygen species in male infertility derives from their ability to induce harmful chemical and structural changes to sperm DNA; plasma proteins and lipids; and mitochondrial membranes. Supplementation of exogenous antioxidants can improve sperm quality throughout life by reducing oxidative stress. Polyphenols are a group of chemical substances common in plants and structurally characterized by the presence of one or more phenol unit. Polyphenols are one of the most abundant antioxidants in the human diet.

In this Special Issue, we seek to evaluate the effects of oxidative stress and the action of polyphenols on semen motility and sperm concentration. In addition, this Special Issue will examine how the use of polyphenols as supplements can support the treatment of infertility through their strong capability to neutralize reactive oxygen species, regulate DNA damage, and improve fertility.
