Dear Colleagues,
The topic of exercise in diabetes is important as it represents an obvious, mandatory, low-cost, non-pharmacological measure to counteract the emergency of chronic diseases in current societies.
In the comprehensive approach to diabetes management, regular physical activity reduces the risk of many associated diseases to which individuals with diabetes, particularly those with type 2 diabetes mellitus, are predisposed. These include hypertension, coronary heart disease and obesity.
More specifically, the prescription of systematic and tailored physical exercise in people with diabetes can improve their glycemic control, thereby preventing and/or curing the development of complications from diabetes.
The future challenge is to identify optimal regimes of physical exercise that have clear-cut beneficial effects for people living with diabetes.
The present Research Topic therefore aims to deepen our understanding of:
- The beneficial effect of exercise prescription in diabetes;
- The immune-modulatory effects of exercise in chronic diseases for increasing metabolic health;
- Exercise-driven metabolomic changes that underlie improvement of cardio-metabolic status.
