Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We recently accepted an invitation to serve as the Guest Editor of a Special Issue of the journal Frontiers in Bioscience-Landmark entitled "Cytokine storm in lung diseases".

I invite you to contribute a review article or full research paper for peer review and possible publication in this Special Issue.

Description of topic for the special issue

There is currently no widely accepted, single definition of cytokine storm or cytokine release syndrome. There is also disagreement about how these disorders differ from an appropriate inflammatory response. Cytokine storm and cytokine release syndrome are life-threatening, systemic inflammatory syndromes that are characterized by elevated levels of circulating cytokines and immune-cell hyperactivation and that can be triggered by various pathogens, cancers, and autoimmune disorders.

A vigorous inflammatory response to pathogens may be inappropriate if it causes excessive secondary organ dysfunction. An uncontrolled and high level of cytokines is defined as a pathologic state and one in which patients may benefit from treatment with cytokine neutralization and other anti-inflammatory agents. The distinction between a normal and a dysregulated response to severe infection is often unclear, especially because certain cytokines may help in controlling infection, but be simultaneously harmful to the host. The interdependence of inflammatory mediators further complicates the distinction between a normal and a dysregulated response. The onset and duration of a cytokine storm may vary depending on the cause and on the treatments administered. Patients with a cytokine storm may have a fever, fatigue, anorexia, headache, rash, diarrhea, arthralgia, myalgia, and neuropsychiatric findings. These symptoms may arise directly from cytokine-induced tissue damage or acute-phase physiological changes, or they may result from immune-cell–mediated responses. Many patients have respiratory symptoms, including cough and tachypnea. These can progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with hypoxemia and require mechanical ventilation. It is important for the clinician to recognize a cytokine storm because of its prognostic and therapeutic implications. This special issue will provide a comprehensive overview of the definition of a cytokine storm, as well as its pathophysiological features, clinical presentation, and management.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted via our online editorial system at https://imr.propub.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to start your submission. Manuscripts can be submitted now or up until the deadline. All papers will go through peer-review process. Accepted papers will be published in the journal (as soon as accepted) and meanwhile listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, reviews as well as short communications are preferred. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office to announce on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts will be thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. Please visit the Instruction for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) in this open access journal is 2500 USD. Submitted manuscripts should be well formatted in good English.
