Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Endometriosis is an estrogen linked pathology that affects women of reproductive age. The basis of endometriosis is the growth of ectopic glandular and stromal tissue outside the uterine cavity. The symptoms of endometriosis are extremely variable ranging from asymptomatic cases to extreme fatigue, dismenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, and infertility.
An enormous increase in the diagnosis of endometriosis has occurred in the last 10 years. Such advances are principally due to increased knowledge within the clinical community as well as improved diagnostic tools.

Recently, several clinical strategies have been proposed to tailor individualized disease management to help alleviate the symptoms of endometriosis. These include changes in lifestyle, pain relief medication, hormonal therapy, and various types of surgery. Nevertheless, currently available data estimate that 10% of women are affected with endometriosis and this carries important consequences on public health and health care expenses.

The aim of this Special Issue is to evaluate current medical and surgical approaches for endometriosis with the goal of avoiding delayed disease treatment. Delayed treatment could lead to a worsening of the disease, and often results in a poorer quality of life and a reduced fertility in young women. As the management of endometriosis remains challenging, the timing of intervention is another important goal in this field.
