Health Management of Endometriosis

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent, chronic disease involving implantation and growth of the endometrium outside the uterine cavity. This is accompanied by an immune and inflammatory background with a predominant pain component. Endometriosis occurs in 17-44% of patients of reproductive age in the form of peritoneal implants and adhesions, as well as endometriomas. The exact etiopathogenesis of endometriosis has yet to be clearly defined. Regardless of the postulated origin, it appears that changes in the immune system allow the implantation and development of endometrial fragments at the ectopic site.

The degree of pain associated with endometriosis is not proportional to the severity of the disease. The presence of small foci of peritoneal endometriosis can cause severe pain, while cysts of large size may not cause any discomfort. Moreover, pain in the course of endometriosis is quite subjective.

Treatment of endometriosis should be individualized depending on the disease stage, reproductive plans and pain symptoms.

The most frequently recommended type of physical activity for endometriosis patients is aerobic training (so-called cardio) of medium intensity. Another beneficial type of physical activity for endometriosis is fascial and connective tissue training. This can take the form of stretching, yoga or roller training.

Researchers with an interest in the above-mentioned problems of endometriosis are encouraged to share their work in a special issue on endometriosis.
